Ilkley Jazz Festival 2017 Line up

This year we are aiming to be bigger and better than previous years!!!
So we have 5 new (to us) venues, 14 amazing acts and 3 events for you to attend.

Ilkley Jazz Festival is a small festival that has been growing steadily over the last 4 years and this year it is going to be even bigger with 14 acts that have just been announced at this years festival and 3 educational events.
Headlining is Ian Shaw one of the worlds best male jazz singers often compared with Kurt Ellling and Mark Murphy, he will be performing at the Winter Gardens on 18th August. Ian will be performing music from his latest album Theory of Joy.

On Saturday 19th there are 5 acts that give the full breadth of the contemporary jazz genre, the day starts at 1pm in the Winter Gardens with Jamil Sheriff’s piano trio, followed by British Jazz Award winning Jamie Brownfields trumpet led quartet, and then Mobo nominated James Mainwaring leads a new sax lead quartet. After a short break for tea, expect a masterclass in jazz singing as Beverley sings Carmichael at 6.30pm followed by John Crawford headlining Saturday with Latin influenced jazz music from his latest Album Times of Tides.

Opening the festival we have the outstanding jazz singer Zoe Gilby from Newcastle performing at Monkmans with bassist Andy Champion on Wednesday 16th. Blues guitarist Dave Smith will be playing way down in the depths of Martinez Cellar Bar. On Thursday jazz singer Julie Edwards will be captivating us at Quinta and the improvisational talents of the Matt Aplin Trio will be playing his project Treppenwitz at Freinds of Ham.
The Wweekend starts with Backchat Brass who will be surprising us with pop up performances around town. Virtuoso saxophonist Stuart MacDonald plays at Monkmans on Friday 18th. On Sunday, Hot Club du Nord, an amazing violin led gypsy band from Newcastle will be playing in the Black Hat. 

The festival closes with the fantastic community jazz band Dales Jam on the Ilkley Banstand.

There are 3 educational events where you can learn a bit more about Jazz, the Late night jazz jam is your chance to play, the long running workshop and the masterclass are all free!
There are also another 8 events around town in various venues including Monkmans, Quinta, The Band-stand, The Black Hat, Friends of Ham and Martinez.

Zoe Gilby           
First time to the festival for Zoe, coming from Newcastle Zoe will be performing an intimate set of voice and  accompanied by the bass playing husband Andy Champion

Dave Smith        
As we all know jazz is based on the blues, Dave Smith is a traditional styled blues guitarist and singer, expect old school blues!
Julie Edwards duo                          
Nominated and shortlisted for the Yorkshire Jazz Vocalist of the Year in 2010, Derbyshire born vocalist Julie Edwards brings Kevin Dearden to Ilkley for a classic set of Jazz Standards

Original compositions and improvisations interwoven with music from the swing and early bop era, from some of Leeds finest young musicians: Matt Aplin piano; Tom Riviere double bass; Steve Hanley drums.

Backchat Brass
This 6 piece band are going to be out and about in Ilkley town centre, they play a mix of  contemporary and jazz standards

Stuart MacDonald
One of Yorkshires premier saxophonists, will be playing the music whilst you dine in Monkmans
Ian Shaw - Theory of Joy
It is a great pleasure for us to have Ian Shaw and his trio headline at Ilkley Jazz Festival this year, featuring songs from his recent album Theory of Joy. Ian is joined by his powerhouse trio, Barry Green piano; Mick Hutton bass and Dave Ohm drums.
“Best Jazz Vocalist” at the BBC Jazz Awards in 2007 and 2004, and nominated in the Best UK Vocalist category at the JazzFM awards in 2013, Ian Shaw has already amassed a number of highly acclaimed internationally released albums and is a popular performer both in the UK and the US. He has been cited, along with Mark Murphy and Kurt Elling, as one of the world’s finest male jazz vocalists.

Jamil Sheriff Trio – Places Like This
Jamil’s latest project is a powerful combination of three of the UK’s finest jazz musicians (Dave Walsh, Drums and Pete Turner, Bass) Jamil is known throughout the UK Jazz scene for his lyrical and rhythmic approach to original music, and this latest project is no exception.
Jamie Brownfield Quartet
JBQ consists of British Jazz Awards rising star 2016, Jamie on Trumpet. Tom Kincaid Piano, Ken Marley Bass, and Jack Cotterill Drums. This fresh and exciting quartet play a vast range of different styles; their own mix of  New Orleans street beat, swing & reggae.
James Mainwarring Trio - Ikigai
The trio of Bass Drums and Sax is a new line up for James who is an award winning composer and multi-instrumentalist best known for his saxophone playing in the Mercury Prize Nominated Roller Trio. ‘edgy. earthy, bellicose tenor sax’ JazzMann

Beverley Beirne Quartet - Beverley Sings Carmichael
Beverley returns with contemporary renditions of her favourite Hoagy Carmichael songs. Not many singers dare take on Carmichael songs that span the golden age of jazz from 1920s – 1950s, expect ‘a masterclass in jazz singing’ Be Bop Spoken Here,  from one of the UK’s finest jazz singers.

John Crawford  - Times and Tides
Pianist and composer John Crawford returns to Ilkley Jazz Festival  to present his second album Times and Tides, leading a Quintet featuring superb instrumentalists. A musical journey through originals, and arrangements of songs by Jobim, Pat Metheny, Paco de Lucia,  Salif Keita among others, the show, is influenced by Latin American and flamenco sounds.

Hot Club Du Nord
Bring to life the classic repertoire of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli's Hot Club de France. This band has a wealth of experience, knowledge and love of the hot club/ gypsy jazz style.
The music is free (and easy) but drinks and food have to be paid for!

Dales Jam
Community Jazz from Skipton under the guidance of Richard Ormrod on the Bandstand.
