ILKLEY JAZZ FESTIVAL 2015
Last August was the inaugural jazz festival in Ilkley following the previous years jazz day, as part of the Ilkley Summer festival.
It all started on Friday the 21st with Jacqui Dankworth and her husband Charlie Woods, in an intimate duet setting at the Kings Hall, hard to pull off intimate with 300 people but Jacquis gentle warmth combined with Charlie's jovial vibrancy managed it. They presented us with a mix of tunes from Memphis, to standards and some pleasant surprises like a great flamenco version of Windmills of my mind by Michel Legrand.
On Saturday the festival moved to The Wildman Studio at Ilkley Playhouse, where the Saxophonist, Composer, Songwriter gave a well attended master-class in song-writing. Duncan shared his experiences and knowledge and a tale or two, demonstrating songs with the aid of John Crawford on piano, Esther Bennett voice and Beverley Beirne voice, and who knew that 'What a wonderful world' is based on 'Baa Baa Black-sheep'!
Directly afterwards, the Jazz Workshop was held where musicians on a variety of different instruments; Ukuleles, Guitar, Violin, Voice, Clarinet, Trumpet, Trombone and a mixture of Saxophones, were coached by Adrian Knowles and Ben Lowman which culminated in a wonderful end of class performance, now available on You Tube!
Later that evening, Duncan Lamont graced the stage at the Wildman Studio with singers Esther Bennett and Beverley Beirne backed by the excellent rhythm section of John Crawford - piano, Simon Read - bass and Matt Parkinson - drums, to perform songs that were all written by Duncan. The 84 year old nimbly accompanied the singers on tenor sax and chatted to the audience about the songs and how they came about. Both Esther and Beverley were in great voice, singing these complex songs with ease. The encore involved audience participation with two audience members trying their hand at scat singing.
The festival then moved again, this time to The Grove Restaurant for the Late Night Jam session led by Beverley Beirne where some of the attendees of the workshop got to perform with a professional trio, Matt Aplin on piano with Simon Read bass and Matt Parkinson drums. However it wasn't long before Esther Bennett and Duncan Lamont, from the previous concert were also jamming until 1 am.
The festival remained at the Grove on Sunday for the closing act Djangologie from Newcastle who played up tempo swing and haunting ballads in the gypsy jazz style, giving the Grove a Parisian feel with members of the audience spilling out onto the sunlit terrace.
Ilkley Jazz Festival would like to thank all those that attended the events and the performers and tutors who made this a great weekend and also the Ilkley Summer Festival for supporting the first Ilkley Jazz Festival. Congratulations to the 3 winners of the email prize draw!
See you again next year!
ILKLEY JAZZ FESTIVAL 2014
Ilkley Jazz Festival started as a day of jazz as part of the month long Ilkley Summer Festival in 2014, studio on the Grove.
The day started with a workshop, Adrian Knowles and Ben Lowman where the tutors who talked through the importance of Blues in Jazz to an enthusiastic crowd (30 or so musicians) ranging in ages from 5 upwards, with a variety of instruments, saxes, trumpets, trombones, bass and guitars.
Using C jam blues the workshop progressed this performance:
After a short break/sound check the first band of the day were Ben Lowman’s Django project, with a unique twist of 4 saxophones playing gypsy style jazz.
The next band was the New York Brass Band, who coming all the way from York, Yorkshire brought their riotous street style jazz to the studio on the grove
The day finalised with Beverley Beirne’s Stripey animals
All in all, a great day of Jazz was had for the 100 or so guests.
